Racing Into the Future: Audree Blankenship's Journey in Motorsports
By Women's Motorsports Network | February 20, 2025
When passion meets dedication, inspiring stories unfold. This is certainly true for 15-year-old Audree Blankenship, a sophomore at Lakeland Junior Senior High School in LaGrange, who is rapidly making her mark in the motorsports world. Audree recently sat down with Melinda Russell on the Women's Motorsports Network podcast to share her journey, dreams, and the road ahead.
A Family Legacy on the Track
Audree’s love for racing runs deep in her family roots. With her grandfather and father both involved in racing, she grew up surrounded by the roar of engines and the thrill of the track. "If my dad wasn't racing, we’d still be at the track watching," she shared. Her journey began with kart racing before transitioning to a Hornet, a decision that set her on a more sustainable path in motorsports.
Racing with Heart and Hustle
Audree currently races in the Sport Compact and Outlaw Front Wheel Drive divisions, with Angola Motorsports Speedway as her home track. This year, she's aiming to travel with the National Compact Touring Series. Building her new car with her father has been both a learning experience and a bonding opportunity. "It's special because when it’s done, my dad can say, 'I built that,'" Audree said.
Overcoming Challenges and Gaining Respect
For Audree, the biggest challenge has been consistency on the track and earning the respect of fellow drivers. "As a 15-year-old girl, it's hard to be taken seriously, but I believe in myself," she explained. Her performance at the Michigan Cup, where she secured a top 10 finish, proved her capabilities and boosted her confidence.
Dreams Beyond the Finish Line
While NASCAR might be a dream, Audree is realistic about her goals. "My dad says there’s nothing wrong with being a local legend," she noted. Her focus is on continuous improvement, earning respect, and inspiring young fans. Autograph nights hold a special place in her heart, where she sees young girls looking up to her just as she once looked up to drivers in the stands.
Building a Community and Future in Racing
Audree's support system includes her family, local sponsors like Bill's Professional Towing and Repair, and her community. Her commitment extends beyond personal achievements; she wants to encourage more girls to get involved in racing. "You have to set reasonable goals and not let others' opinions affect you," she emphasized.
Looking Ahead
With her new car, adorned in a striking red, white, and blue theme inspired by her main sponsor, Audree is gearing up for an exciting season. Her sights are set on earning her first feature win, traveling to new tracks, and continuing to learn from every race.
Audree’s story is a testament to perseverance, family support, and following one's passion. As she races into the future, she’s not just competing; she’s paving the way for the next generation of women in motorsports.

The Women’s Motorsports Network podcast is all about celebrating the incredible women who make an impact in the world of motorsports. This week, we had the pleasure of talking with Hannah Coltrane Hamrick, promotions director for Capital City Speedway in Ashland, Virginia. Hannah shared her inspiring journey into motorsports, her passion for community, and how racing helps her honor her late husband, Jimmy Hamrick.
🚦 From Childhood Fascination to Speedway Promotions
Growing up in Richmond, Virginia, Hannah’s love for cars started young, inspired by her mom’s favorite car—a classic 1957 Corvette Convertible. Over the years, her passion for engines and racing grew stronger. Her connection to go-kart racing deepened in 2012 when she met Jimmy Hamrick, a dedicated racer at Capital City Speedway. Saturdays became synonymous with racing, teamwork, and community for Hannah and Jimmy. Their bond through racing lasted until Jimmy’s passing in 2019—a loss that motivated Hannah to continue supporting the track he loved.
“It helps me feel close to him. Racing was our life together,” Hannah shared.
🏎️ The Road to Promotions Director
Hannah’s involvement with Capital City Speedway grew when she organized the Jimmy Hamrick Memorial Race in 2021. The event has become an annual tradition, attracting more sponsors and racers each year. Impressed by her dedication and organizational skills, the speedway’s leadership team, including Elaine Beasley, asked Hannah to step into the promotions director role in late 2023.
📢 Revving Up Promotions: Creativity on a Budget
Hannah is determined to revitalize the track’s attendance and bring in new fans. Her strategies include:
· Hosting display booths at tracks like Dominion Raceway to raise awareness.
· Engaging local radio stations for promotional ads.
· Developing creative outreach for kids through youth organizations and schools.
· Leveraging social media with frequent updates and race-day excitement.
· Exploring community partnerships with local businesses for mutual promotion.
“We want to reach people who’ve never been to the track. Once they experience the excitement, they’ll want to come back,” she explained.
🏁 Racing Calendar Highlights for 2025:
📅 March 8 – Season Opener
📅 March 15 – Spring Gobbler (One of the track’s biggest events)
📅 VDKA Races – Twice annually
📅 November – Turkey Trot (Signature end-of-season race)
While the track takes a break during the summer heat of July and August, Hannah is brainstorming ways to keep the community engaged year-round.
💡 Promotional Ideas Hannah’s Exploring:
✅ Arrive-and-drive opportunities for newcomers.
✅ Family nights offering discounts for first-time attendees.
✅ Partnerships with local youth groups for free admissions.
✅ Pop-up displays at local businesses to attract new fans.
✅ Email newsletters to keep fans informed and connected.
🏆 Why She Does It:
For Hannah, promoting Capital City Speedway is more than a job—it’s personal.
“This is my way of keeping Jimmy’s spirit alive and staying connected to the racing family we built together,” she said.
The track isn’t just a place to race—it’s a community. Hannah’s commitment shines through her tireless efforts to foster that connection for both longtime racers and first-time fans.

🏁 Exciting News! 🏁
Kylie Glick: The 14-Year-Old Racing Star Taking the Motorsports World by Storm
Motorsports is a tough, competitive, and high-speed industry, but Kylie Glick is proving that age is just a number. At just 14 years old, she is already making a name for herself in Pro Late Model racing, competing in the Cars Tour Series on the West Coast. From her family’s deep racing roots to her dedication on and off the track, Kylie’s journey is an inspiring story of passion, perseverance, and skill.
A Legacy of Racing in Her Blood
Kylie Glick isn’t just another young racer—she’s the fourth generation in her family to race cars. While she didn’t grow up fully immersed in the sport, the racing gene eventually caught up with her. After trying go-karts as a child and briefly stepping away, she found herself drawn back in when her younger brother started racing. One lap in his car was all it took for Kylie to realize her true calling.
Since her first official race in 2020, Kylie has made rapid progress, moving from quarter midgets to Pro Late Models in record time. In just a few years, she has gone from a young racer watching from the sidelines to competing against some of the best drivers in stock car racing.
Balancing Racing, School, and Fitness
Racing isn’t just about driving—it requires discipline, physical strength, and dedication. Kylie is homeschooled, which gives her more time to work hands-on with her race car, learn from her team, and improve as a driver.
To stay in peak shape for racing, she took up wrestling last year, a sport that has helped her build muscle, improve endurance, and sharpen her competitive edge. Kylie admits that wrestling was never on her radar, but now she credits it as a major factor in her racing development.
“I’ve definitely learned that this season,” Kylie says. “It really toughens you up.”
Social Media Savvy: The Secret to Building a Brand in Racing
Kylie’s success isn’t just about what happens on the track. She and her mom have mastered the power of social media, creating a strong online presence that helps connect with fans, attract sponsors, and grow her racing career.
From high-quality videos and race-day updates to behind-the-scenes footage, Kylie ensures her fans get an inside look at her journey. Her social media efforts have led to recognition from fans across the country, many of whom show up at the track just to meet her.
“When I go to new tracks, I’ll have people come up and say, ‘I saw you on my For You page!’” Kylie shares. “It’s crazy to hear.”
The Racing Mindset: Overcoming Challenges and Staying Focused
Like any racer, Kylie has faced tough days at the track. From on-track incidents to learning curves in new divisions, she has had to develop a strong mental game to push through obstacles.
Her spotter, Tony, plays a huge role in keeping her focused and motivated. With experience coaching his own daughters, Tony knows how to communicate with Kylie effectively, helping her stay calm, confident, and ready to perform.
Even on tough race days, Kylie has a simple motto:
“If you’re at the racetrack, it’s a good day. Not everyone gets this opportunity, and I don’t take it for granted.”
Looking Ahead: The Future of Kylie Glick in Motorsports
Kylie’s goal is clear—she wants to keep climbing the ranks in racing. With plans to compete in more East Coast races, continue improving in the Cars Tour, and eventually make her way into NASCAR, she is setting the foundation for a long and successful career.
She is already making waves in the industry, racing alongside legends like Kevin Harvick and proving that she has the talent and determination to go far.

Ronni Johnson 2-12-2025
Ronni Johnson: The 19-Year-Old Trailblazing Women’s Motorsports
🏁 Breaking Barriers, One Lap at a Time
Motorsports has long been considered a male-dominated sport, but Ronni Johnson, a 19-year-old dirt track racer from South Georgia, is proving that speed and skill have no gender. In a recent episode of the Women's Motorsports Network Podcast, hosted by Melinda Russell, Ronni shares her incredible journey into racing, the challenges she's faced, and how she's inspiring the next generation of female racers.
How It All Started
Ronni’s love for racing began in 2021 when she watched her dad return to the track. Fascinated by the adrenaline rush and the energy of the sport, she knew she wanted to race, too. However, like many young women stepping into male-dominated fields, she wasn’t taken seriously at first.
“I told my dad I wanted to race, and at first, he didn’t take me seriously,” Ronni recalls. But in 2022, after reminding him of her dream, he finally bought her a race car—a Crown Vic, which she painted pink and white to make a bold statement: “Yes, I’m a girl, and I can race.”
Her racing journey officially began on her birthday in August, and since then, she hasn’t looked back.
Proving Herself on the Track
Like many female racers, Ronni faced skepticism from male competitors. She recalls how she struggled to be accepted in the racing community, feeling isolated in the pits with only her dad for support.
"I really didn't feel like I belonged at first. The guys didn’t talk to me, and they thought I wouldn’t be able to handle racing," she says.
But Ronni let her performance do the talking. Within her first year, she not only gained respect but secured four race wins and numerous top-five finishes, leaving some of the guys she raced against feeling frustrated.
“They had been trying their whole lives to win a race, and here I come, a young girl, beating them,” she laughs.
Over time, attitudes started to shift. Today, she is respected as a competitor and treated as an equal on the track.
The Challenges of Being a Woman in Motorsports
Even with her growing success, Ronni still faces challenges as a female racer. Many male drivers underestimated her at first, and some still struggle to accept a woman competing at their level.
But instead of letting the negativity bring her down, Ronni has used it as motivation. She has also become a mentor, encouraging more women and young girls to get into racing. When she first started, there were only two women in her class. Now, there are seven female racers, thanks in part to Ronni leading by example.
“I've had girls come up to me and say, ‘You’re young, and if you can do it, maybe I can, too.’ That’s what makes it all worth it,” she says.
Learning Life Lessons Through Racing
Ronni’s time behind the wheel has given her more than just racing skills—it has shaped her confidence, perseverance, and ability to handle pressure. These skills unexpectedly saved her life when she was involved in a serious car accident last December.
“I totaled my brand-new truck, but if I didn’t have my racing experience, I wouldn’t have known how to control the car,” she shares. “If I didn’t have God on my side, I wouldn’t be here today.”
Her experience reinforced her belief in trusting herself, taking risks, and never letting fear hold her back.
What’s Next for Ronni?
Right now, Ronni is focused on continuing her dirt track racing career in her Crown Vic while preparing to transition to a 602 Charger in 2026. She also hopes to expand into asphalt racing this year.
While motorsports is her passion, Ronni is also pursuing a degree in business management and marketing, which could open doors to new opportunities in the racing industry.
When asked what she hopes to be remembered for, Ronni’s answer is simple:
“I want people to remember that I took the risk, that I was never ashamed to be myself, and that I paved the way for more girls in racing.”
Final Thoughts: Driving Change for Women in Motorsports
Ronni Johnson is more than just a talented racer—she’s an inspiration for women in motorsports and beyond. Her story is a testament to what happens when passion, perseverance, and courage come together.
She’s proving that the track isn’t just for men—it’s for anyone willing to put in the work, push past barriers, and chase their dreams.

Landspeed Louise 2-10-2025
Landspeed Louise: Breaking Barriers and Speed Records
A Trailblazer in Motorsports
In the world of motorsports, where speed and skill collide, few names command as much respect as Landspeed Louise Noeth. A force to be reckoned with, she has built a career that spans jet dragsters, land speed records, investigative journalism, and fighting for women in racing. If you haven’t heard her story yet, you’re in for a ride as fast as her Bonneville records.
During a riveting conversation on the Women’s Motorsports Network Podcast, Louise shared her journey, from humble beginnings in Chicago to becoming a world record-holder, journalist, and advocate for women in motorsports.
From the Streets of Chicago to the Salt Flats of Bonneville
Louise’s passion for cars started at an early age. Growing up on the south side of Chicago, she found herself drawn to the sound of foreign sports cars tinkered with by her neighbor. At just seven years old, she began learning about engines, sneaking her small hands into tight spaces that adults couldn’t reach. By the time she was legally allowed to drive, she had already mastered muscle cars and hot rods.
But Louise wasn’t just about driving—she was also an artist. She painted cars for local racers, bartering her skills in exchange for seat time behind the wheel. This unique hustle laid the groundwork for her future in the racing world.
The Call of Jet Power
While she had experience in drag racing and hot rods, Louise’s real love affair began when she encountered jet-powered dragsters. The moment she saw a jet car in action, the raw power and roaring flames captivated her.
Eventually, she found herself behind the wheel of a J46 jet dragster, working with Doug Rose and his iconic Green Mamba jet car. At this point, Louise had already left behind a successful corporate career in sound engineering (where she worked on Grammy Award shows) to chase the thrill of high-speed racing.
Her journey wasn’t just about speed—she mastered the mechanics, tuning jet engines using photography to analyze flame patterns and optimize performance. Her deep technical knowledge and hands-on experience set her apart in an industry dominated by men.
Writing Her Own Legacy
Racing was exhilarating, but an unexpected turn came when a journalist approached Louise at the track, asking for help writing about jet cars. She took on the challenge and, to her surprise, received a check for her work.
That realization changed everything. She could still be involved in racing—and get paid to do it—without getting covered in oil and jet fuel.
From that moment on, she pursued journalism, becoming the first female editor at Petersen Publishing (the powerhouse behind Hot Rod Magazine, Car Craft, and Motor Trend). She used her platform to champion safety, innovation, and equal opportunities for women in motorsports.
Her writing and photography have appeared in publications worldwide, and her work documenting the sport has helped preserve its history.
A Record-Breaking Career at Bonneville
Of all the places Louise has been, the Bonneville Salt Flats hold a special place in her heart. She played a pivotal role in setting world records, most notably with Team Vesco’s Turbinator, the world’s fastest wheel-driven vehicle at 458 mph.
She described how their record-setting run in 2001 was proof that restoring and maintaining the Salt Flats was vital. Sadly, years of government mismanagement and mining have threatened Bonneville’s future, making it harder for racers to achieve new records safely.
Louise has been an outspoken advocate, working to preserve the Salt Flats so that future generations can continue to push the limits of speed.
Bonneville’s Women of Land Speed Racing
Louise’s passion for racing history led her to write Bonneville’s Women of Land Speed Racing, a book that highlights 350+ female racers who have set more than 1,000 land speed records since 1972.
Her goal? To prove that women belong at the top of motorsports. From 16-year-olds fresh out of driver’s ed to 80-year-olds setting motorcycle records, her book tells the untold stories of the fastest women on Earth.
“Never Let Anyone Judge Your Abilities by Their Limitations”
Louise’s final words in the interview were powerful:
"Never let anyone judge your abilities by their limitations."
Too often, people tell women what they shouldn’t do, labeling certain sports and careers as "too dangerous" or "too difficult." Louise has spent a lifetime proving them wrong, and she hopes that her story—and the stories of other women in motorsports—will inspire future generations.
If you’re a racing fan, an aspiring speed demon, or just someone who loves a great underdog story, Landspeed Louise’s journey is proof that passion and persistence can take you further than you ever imagined.

Rylee Hanson 2-9-2025
Rylee Hanson: The 17-Year-Old Mini Stock Racer Driving Towards NASCAR Dreams
Introduction
Motorsports has long been considered a male-dominated sport, but young women like Rylee Hanson are proving that speed, skill, and determination know no gender. At just 17 years old, Rylee is making waves in the racing world, competing in Mini Stocks at Cordell Motor Speedway and setting her sights on an even bigger goal—becoming the first female NASCAR crew chief.
From ATVs to Asphalt: Rylee’s Racing Journey
Rylee’s love for motorsports started at an early age. Growing up in Cordell, Georgia, she was constantly surrounded by ATVs, dirt bikes, and high-speed adventures. Her father played a major role in fueling her passion for racing, surprising her with new rides every year. But it wasn’t until 2021 that she discovered Bandolero racing, which ultimately became the starting point of her competitive career.
Her brother introduced her to the sport after unexpectedly bringing home a Bandolero race car. Though initially hesitant to hit the track, Rylee soon mustered the courage to race—and she never looked back. By 2022, she was fully committed, and her family purchased a second car so she could compete.
She raced Bandoleros until early 2024 before making the leap to Mini Stock racing—a move that would bring new challenges and new triumphs.
Breaking Barriers as the Only Female in Mini Stocks
While Bandoleros featured more female drivers, stepping into Mini Stocks placed Rylee in a completely different environment—she is currently the only female in her class. Despite being surrounded by an all-male field, Rylee holds her ground, proving her skills with every lap she takes.
She admits that aggression on the track was initially her biggest challenge. Concerned about hurting others’ feelings or getting into altercations, she held back. However, with experience and guidance from her dad, she learned to push herself to be competitive without fear.
Her dad’s advice? “We’re not here to make friends. We’re here to race.” Those words stuck with her, and now she races with confidence, knowing that respect on the track is earned through skill and determination.
Beyond Racing: Rylee’s Passion for Cars & Mechanical Engineering
Rylee isn’t just a talented driver—she’s also deeply involved in the mechanics of her cars. Unlike some racers who leave car maintenance to their crew, she spends hours in the shop with her dad, working on setups, adjusting parts, and learning everything she can about the vehicle.
This hands-on experience has inspired her ultimate career goal—to become a NASCAR crew chief. She plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering, using her knowledge to lead a racing team at the highest level. With her work ethic and passion, there’s no doubt she’s on the right track!
What Racing Has Taught Rylee
Beyond speed and strategy, racing has profoundly shaped Rylee’s personal growth. She once considered herself shy and introverted, but being part of the motorsports world forced her out of her comfort zone.
From engaging with fans to networking with fellow racers, she’s developed confidence and communication skills that will serve her both on and off the track.
The Mustang Build: A Special Father-Daughter Project
In addition to racing, Rylee also shares a deep bond with her dad over another passion—her 2006 Mustang GT. Together, they transformed a rundown car into a high-performance ride, complete with BBK long tube headers, a rebuilt transmission, a custom-tuned engine, and a sleek new interior.
Driving it as her daily car, Rylee gets plenty of attention—especially from the guys at school, some of whom can’t help but feel a little jealous of her V8 powerhouse!
Advice for Young Girls Interested in Racing
Rylee is a strong advocate for women in motorsports. She encourages any girl who dreams of racing to go for it—despite the industry’s male-dominated reputation.
💬 Her message? "There’s nothing that says women can’t be in motorsports. If you have the passion, the drive, and the work ethic, you belong here."
What’s Next for Rylee Hanson?
With the 2025 racing season ahead, Rylee is laser-focused on improving as a driver, gaining more experience, and making her mark in Mini Stocks. She also plans to explore new tracks, including Southern National in North Carolina and Senoia Raceway for dirt racing.
Her long-term goal? To work her way up to NASCAR, either as a driver or as a crew chief, leading a team with her engineering expertise.
🚗💨 No matter where her journey takes her, one thing is certain—Rylee Hanson is a name to watch in the world of motorsports!

Karley Miller: The 15-Year-Old Racer Taking Motorsports by Storm 🏁🔥
At just 15 years old, Karley Miller is already making waves in the motorsports world. A third-generation racer from Pennsylvania, Karley started her journey in junior sprints and is now gearing up to compete in V8 modifieds—a major leap in her career. Her passion for speed, combined with her dedication to sports and school, makes her a rising star to watch.
Racing Runs in the Family
Karley’s love for racing is no accident—it’s in her blood. Her dad raced 270 micros before an accident ended his career, and her brother also had his share of dirt bike racing. When Karley decided she wanted to race, her family made sure she had a safe and exciting path to follow. For her 12th birthday, she received her first junior sprint car, and she hasn’t looked back since.
A Passion for Competition
Over the past few years, Karley has raced at tracks across Pennsylvania, including Tri-City, Mercer, Knox, and Blanket Hill Speedway. Now, she’s stepping up to a V8 modified, racing with Jerry Schaefer Racing—a move that will test her abilities and take her career to new heights.
Challenges on and off the Track
Like any racer, Karley has faced challenges. Whether it’s learning the mechanics of a new car, dealing with race-day nerves, or handling criticism from skeptics, she has remained determined. She recalls moments where parents in the stands cheered against her just because she was a girl, but instead of letting it bring her down, she used it as motivation to prove them wrong.
Balancing Racing, School, and Softball
Beyond racing, Karley is also a dedicated softball player—a pitcher, no less! Balancing school, sports, and racing isn’t easy, but she embraces the chaos. Whether she’s at practice or the racetrack, she gives it her all. Her dream? To keep racing, inspire young girls, and maybe even play college softball at Penn State or Florida State.
Inspiring the Next Generation
One of Karley’s most cherished moments was meeting a young girl at an autograph night who told her, “I want to race just like you.” That interaction reminded Karley why she loves motorsports—not just for the thrill, but for the chance to inspire others.

Riding Through Life: Crystal Klein’s Passion for Dirt Biking & Adventure
The world of motorsports is filled with incredible stories of passion, perseverance, and adventure. In our latest Women’s Motorsports Network Podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Crystal Klein, a dirt bike enthusiast from Battle Creek, Michigan, who is redefining what it means to embrace the thrill of two wheels.
From Everyday Life to Off-Road Adventures
Crystal may be a maid by trade and an online entrepreneur, but her true passion lies in the great outdoors—especially when she’s on a dirt bike. Riding has become her escape, her challenge, and her ultimate adventure.
While her two kids and busy lifestyle keep her on her toes, she and her boyfriend share a love for dirt biking, often traveling to Michigan’s woods, West Virginia’s mountains, and even Florida’s sandy trails. Their dream? To hit the road and ride across the country once their kids graduate. 🚀
How Crystal Got Into Dirt Biking
Unlike many riders who grew up in the sport, Crystal's passion took off later in life. Although she dabbled in dirt bikes as a teen, it wasn’t until she met her boyfriend—a dedicated rider and racer—that she decided to fully commit.
After watching him ride on a weekend trip, she knew she wanted in. Starting on a TTR 125, she quickly developed her skills before upgrading to a KX100 and then to her current Husky 150 TEI, which she calls her perfect fit.
The Adventure of a Lifetime
For Crystal, dirt biking isn’t just about speed—it’s about the freedom, the thrill, and the places it takes you. Some of her favorite destinations include:
✔ Hatfield-McCoy Trails in West Virginia 🏔️
✔ KTM World & Croom in Florida 🌴
✔ Michigan’s Lincoln Hills & Single Track Trails 🌲
Whether exploring caves, spotting wildlife, or simply riding through breathtaking landscapes, every trip brings a new story.
Racing? Maybe One Day!
Though Crystal enjoys the thrill of riding, she hasn’t quite made the leap into racing—yet. While her boyfriend competes in sprint enduros and hare scrambles, she prefers the adventure side of dirt biking. However, she’s considering tackling a national enduro race in the future.
Her biggest challenge? Keeping up with the boys! But she’s determined to keep improving and see where the journey takes her.
Why More Women Should Ride
Crystal is a firm believer that dirt biking is an amazing sport for women. It challenges you physically and mentally, builds confidence, and connects you to an incredible community.
💬 “Riding my dirt bike is something I crave. It’s a total escape—no phone, no distractions, just me and the ride.”
Her advice? If you want to ride, just do it! No matter your age, experience, or fears, there’s a bike and a trail waiting for you.
What’s Next for Crystal?
With a growing love for riding, Crystal has a bucket list of places she wants to explore, including:
✅ Colorado’s Rocky Mountains 🏔️
✅ Idaho & Montana’s epic trails 🌲
✅ A dirt bike adventure through Bali’s volcanoes! 🌋
As she balances life, family, and her passion for motorsports, one thing is certain—she’s just getting started.
Final Thoughts
Crystal’s story is a reminder that motorsports isn’t just about competition—it’s about passion, adventure, and community. Whether you’re racing, riding for fun, or just starting out, there’s a place for everyone in the dirt biking world.

Connie Nyholm 2-6-2025
Connie Nyholm: The Visionary Woman Behind VIR’s Success
Motorsports is often seen as a male-dominated industry, but trailblazers like Connie Nyholm are changing the game. As co-owner of Virginia International Raceway (VIR), Nyholm has not only revitalized a historic racetrack but also built a thriving business that fuels the local economy and the motorsports community.
Recently, she joined Melinda Russell on the Women’s Motorsports Network Podcast to share her journey—from growing up in Martinsville, VA, to working in finance and real estate, and ultimately becoming a pioneer in motorsports track ownership.
From Small-Town Roots to Big-Time Success
Nyholm’s story starts in Martinsville, Virginia, where she was raised in a modest household. Though she grew up near Martinsville Speedway, racing wasn’t initially on her radar. Instead, she pursued economics and philosophy at William & Mary, later launching a career in finance at Procter & Gamble and HBO.
But it was her work in commercial real estate that set the stage for her motorsports career. Through networking, she met Harvey Siegel, a vintage racing enthusiast looking to revive VIR, a historic racetrack that had closed in 1974. Recognizing an opportunity to rebuild and reimagine VIR, Nyholm joined forces with Siegel to bring the track back to life.
Reviving VIR: A Track Reborn
Under Nyholm’s leadership, VIR reopened in 2000 after an ambitious redevelopment. What started as a racing facility revival soon became something much bigger—an economic engine for the community. Today, VIR spans 1,250 acres, hosting top-tier events like IMSA, MotoAmerica, and SRO, while also housing 14 businesses, luxury lodging, shooting ranges, karting, and more.
“We’re not just a racetrack,” Nyholm says. “We’re a motorsports destination.”
Her entrepreneurial mindset has made VIR one of the premier racing venues in the U.S., with over 300 event days per year. And as the track approaches its 25th anniversary, the legacy continues to grow.
Breaking Barriers as a Woman in Motorsports
Nyholm’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. As one of the only female track owners, she entered a world where few women held leadership roles. However, with determination and business acumen, she quickly earned respect.
“I never let being a woman define my path,” she explains. “I focused on getting things done, surrounding myself with the best people, and proving our value.”
Her leadership philosophy is simple:
✅ Empower employees with both responsibility and authority
✅ Grow the whole pie, rather than taking a bigger slice
✅ Keep learning from industry experts and peers
Her impact extends beyond racing—she’s a champion for small businesses, local economic growth, and mentoring the next generation of motorsports professionals.
The Future of VIR & Motorsports Innovation
With 25 years of success, Nyholm isn’t slowing down. VIR continues to evolve, with plans for facility expansions, new partnerships, and innovative motorsports experiences.
“Every time people visit, I want them to say, ‘Wow, something new!’” she says.
As for women in motorsports? She’s encouraged by the growing presence of female racers, engineers, and industry leaders—and she’s committed to supporting that movement.
Visit VIR & Be Part of the Legacy
VIR isn’t just a track—it’s a racing community. Whether you’re a fan, driver, or business owner, there’s something for everyone at this motorsports haven.

Abigail Cole: The 13-Year-Old Junior Dragster Driver Racing Towards Success
A Rising Star in Junior Drag Racing
At just 13 years old, Abigail Cole is making a name for herself in the fast-paced world of junior drag racing. Living just south of Seattle, Washington, Abigail has been passionate about racing since she was three years old, and by six, she was already behind the wheel of her own dragster.
Her love for speed and competition has taken her across the country, racing at tracks from Washington to California, Texas, Oklahoma, and beyond. With two championship wins and a strong determination to succeed, Abigail is proving that age is just a number when it comes to talent and perseverance.
How It All Began
Abigail’s love for motorsports started when her parents took her to a national event in Seattle at the age of three. She sat in a junior dragster, watched the powerful Top Fuel dragsters speed down the track, and knew immediately that this was what she wanted to do.
Her father, a drag boat racer, has always been involved in motorsports, while her mother has been a constant supporter. By the age of five, Abigail had her own junior dragster, and at six, she officially started racing.
Achievements on the Track
Since beginning her racing career, Abigail has accomplished remarkable feats:
🏆 2018 Junior Storm Champion at Pacific Raceways
🏆 2023 Junior Thunder Champion
🏆 Winner of Two Wally Trophies (the most prestigious award in drag racing)
🚦 Competing in the 7.90-second bracket, reaching speeds of up to 80 mph
She recently moved up to the 7.90-second class, which means her dragster can complete an eighth-mile run in just 7.9 seconds! Transitioning to a faster class requires skill, confidence, and quick reflexes—something Abigail is working on every day.
Balancing Racing and Homeschooling
Unlike most teenagers, Abigail’s education revolves around her passion for racing. Homeschooled since second grade, she incorporates math, science, and problem-solving directly into her motorsports experience. From analyzing reaction times to fine-tuning her car’s performance, her education is hands-on and practical.
She also focuses on mental strength training, reading books, and practicing visualization techniques to stay sharp on race day.
The Thrill and Camaraderie of Racing
For Abigail, racing isn’t just about speed—it’s about community and teamwork. She loves the camaraderie in drag racing, where competitors support each other, share parts, and help fellow racers whenever needed.
Despite the high speeds, she emphasizes that drag racing is a safe sport thanks to top-tier safety equipment. Sponsored by Impact Racing, she ensures she has the best gear to stay protected on the track.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Abigail’s Racing Career
Abigail has big dreams for the future. By 16, she plans to step into a bigger race car, transitioning from junior dragsters to full-sized drag racing vehicles. She’s also considering Junior Street racing, a stepping stone that allows young drivers to practice in street-legal cars before moving up.
Her ultimate goal? To keep racing, win more championships, and continue inspiring young girls to pursue their passion in motorsports.
Advice for Young Racers
When asked about the biggest challenge in racing, Abigail talks about the importance of mental strength and confidence. Her advice to young racers?
🚦 "Believe in yourself. If you think you can win, you will. If you doubt yourself, you’ve already lost."
She also highlights the importance of learning from mistakes, staying focused, and always pushing forward, no matter the outcome of a race.

Haylee and Sophya Papp 2-5-2025
Racing Sisters Haylee & Sophya Papp: Chasing Dreams on the Track
The world of motorsports is filled with high-speed action, fierce competition, and incredible stories of perseverance. Among those making a name for themselves in the industry are sisters Haylee and Sophya Papp, two young race car drivers who are proving that passion and dedication can fuel success on the track.
In a recent episode of the Women's Motorsports Network Podcast, host Melinda Russell sat down with Haylee and Sophya to discuss their journey into racing, the role of family in their careers, and their aspirations for the future.
From Gymnastics to the Racetrack: A Unique Start
Unlike many young racers who start at the age of five, Haylee and Sophya’s introduction to motorsports came in an unexpected way. Haylee was initially a competitive gymnast, but it was her gymnastics coach who first introduced her to quarter midget racing. Seeing an opportunity to bring new drivers into the sport, the coach encouraged her to give it a try. Haylee instantly fell in love with racing, and soon after, Sophya followed suit, begging her parents to let her try it too.
Their journey began with a quarter midget novice school, where they developed the fundamental skills that would later help them transition to dirt and asphalt racing. Since then, their love for the sport has only grown stronger.
Family Support & Learning the Ropes
One of the biggest influences in Haylee and Sophya’s racing careers is their tight-knit family. Their father, a former offshore powerboat racer, didn’t have experience with quarter midgets, but he quickly learned how to set up and maintain the race cars. Their older sister, Allie, also plays a key role by helping with car maintenance and making sure everything runs smoothly.
Both Haylee and Sophya credit their dad for being an incredible mechanic and coach, teaching them not only how to race but also how to handle the mental challenges of the sport. His ability to guide them through mistakes and help them improve has been a crucial part of their development as drivers.
Challenges in Racing & Growing as Drivers
Transitioning from quarter midgets to dirt and asphalt racing presented new challenges for the sisters. One of the biggest adjustments was learning how to read the track, especially on dirt, where grip and racing lines change constantly. They also had to develop a more aggressive driving style to stay competitive.
Haylee and Sophya agree that mental resilience is just as important as skill. After a bad race, they go back to their trailer, review GoPro footage, and analyze their mistakes to improve for the next event. They’ve learned that owning up to mistakes and learning from them is the key to growth in motorsports.
2024 Racing Plans: A Season Full of Opportunities
This season is shaping up to be an exciting one for the Papp sisters:
· Sophya will be competing in SK Light Modifieds at Stafford Motor Speedway, one of the most well-known asphalt tracks in the country.
· Haylee will be racing in the new IRP Asphalt Midget Series in Indianapolis, an opportunity that will put her in a competitive field on a national stage.
Both are looking forward to traveling to new tracks, meeting new competitors, and gaining experience in different racing disciplines.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Female Racers
One of Haylee and Sophya’s biggest goals is to encourage more young girls to pursue motorsports. They know firsthand that racing has been a male-dominated industry, but they believe the landscape is changing. More and more women are stepping into roles as drivers, engineers, and mechanics.
They hope to be role models for young girls who might be hesitant to try racing, showing them that with hard work and determination, they can compete at any level.
Social Media & Growing Their Brand
Both sisters recognize the importance of social media in motorsports, not just for connecting with fans but also for attracting sponsors. They actively post race updates, behind-the-scenes content, and highlights from their seasons. However, they admit they’re still working on becoming more comfortable with recording themselves and sharing their journey online.
Their goal is to continue improving their social media presence, engaging more with fans, and documenting their experiences both on and off the track.
Final Thoughts
Haylee and Sophya Papp are two rising stars in the world of motorsports, and their journey is just beginning. With their family’s unwavering support, a strong work ethic, and a love for racing, they are well on their way to making an impact in the sport.
As they continue to compete and chase their dreams, they are also paving the way for the next generation of female racers, proving that motorsports is a place where anyone with passion and determination can succeed.
Be sure to follow Haylee and Sophya’s journey on social media and keep an eye out for their upcoming races in 2024! 🚗💨

Empowering Women in Motorsports: A Conversation with Cindy Sisson
The world of motorsports has long been dominated by men, but that narrative is changing, thanks to trailblazers like Cindy Sisson. As a champion for women in racing, Cindy has dedicated her career to advocating for female drivers, engineers, and industry professionals, ensuring they have a seat at the table—or rather, behind the wheel.
From Golf to the Fast Lane
Cindy’s journey into motorsports began in an unexpected place: the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). As a former director, she worked to create opportunities for women in golf. She soon recognized that women in motorsports faced similar challenges—lack of visibility, sponsorships, and networking opportunities. Determined to be part of the solution, she co-founded Women in Motorsports North America (WMNA), a nonprofit organization that provides resources, mentorship, and advocacy for women in the racing industry.
The Women With Drive Summit: A Movement in Motion
One of Cindy’s most impactful initiatives is the Women With Drive Summit, an annual event that brings together women from all areas of motorsports, including drivers, engineers, executives, and fans. What started as a small gathering has grown into a sold-out conference, offering networking opportunities, keynote speeches, and educational panels designed to break barriers and accelerate progress for women in racing.
With plans to expand WMNA through regional chapters, Cindy is ensuring that women in cities like Charlotte, Indianapolis, Detroit, and Los Angeles have access to career resources, mentorship programs, and networking events tailored to their local motorsports communities.
Breaking Barriers and Creating Opportunities
Despite the strides women have made in motorsports, barriers still exist. Cindy and WMNA are working on new programs, including: ✔️ A membership initiative that will fund scholarships and career advancement programs. ✔️ The Racing Prodigy program, which offers sim racers a pathway into real-world racing, eliminating financial obstacles. ✔️ Increased corporate sponsorships to support female drivers and engineers.
How You Can Get Involved
The success of WMNA and Women With Drive relies on a strong community of supporters. Here’s how you can make a difference: ➡️ Attend the Women With Drive Summit 2025 in Indianapolis (December 9-10). ➡️ Follow Women in Motorsports North America (WMNA) for the latest news. ➡️ Support women-led motorsports initiatives through sponsorships and donations. ➡️ Share this blog and spread awareness about the movement!
The Road Ahead
With Cindy Sisson leading the charge, the future of women in motorsports has never been brighter. By fostering a community of empowerment, mentorship, and opportunity, she is helping women break into and thrive in an industry that has long overlooked their contributions.
The movement is in motion—are you ready to join the race? 🚗💨🏁
April Alfaro 2-1-2025
Meet April Alfaro: A Woman Who Races Against the Odds
If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to truly embrace motorsports, April Alfaro’s story is a perfect example. From her childhood spent in a garage to racing alongside her fiancé, April is proving that passion, perseverance, and a bit of adrenaline can lead to incredible things.
Racing From Day One
April's love for motorsports didn't start on a racetrack, but in the back seat of her dad’s dune buggy. Her father, a hot rod enthusiast, introduced her to the roar of V8 engines from a young age. While most girls were playing with dolls, April was learning to work on engines, rebuild cars, and experience the thrill of dirt bikes and drag racing.
Her childhood was spent not just watching but participating in the world of motorsports. It’s no surprise that racing became a part of her adult life, too.
Reigniting the Passion
After stepping away from racing for a while, April found her way back into the sport through Jeff, her fiancé. Jeff, who grew up around racing and even competed against the Andretti family, introduced her to road racing. Their first date? A trip to Blackhawk Farms Raceway, where April was instantly hooked by the speed and energy of the cars.
Despite her background in dirt racing, April was soon behind the wheel of a Porsche 944, racing against much more powerful cars, including GT vehicles. While she may have been a little intimidated at first, her determination and drive pushed her to embrace the challenge.
Biggest Challenges on Track
Every race comes with its own set of hurdles, and for April, it was learning to trust her car and the people working on it—most notably, Jeff, who rebuilt and tuned their cars. With Jeff’s guidance, April learned the importance of patience, focus, and building a strong connection with the car.
But her biggest personal challenge was physical: she had to lose 130 pounds to comfortably fit into a race seat. It wasn’t an easy journey, but the moment she sat in that car and crossed the finish line for the first time, the hard work paid off. The emotions of that moment are something she’ll never forget.
The Power of Women in Motorsports
One of the things that fuels April’s passion for racing is the community of women who are making waves in the sport. Whether it's the women she’s met at the track or racers like Stephanie Anderson, who competes in a B-Spec car, April is driven by the need to see more women in motorsports.
“We can put the pedal to the metal just like the guys,” April says, and she’s right. Women like April are taking charge and breaking down barriers, proving that racing isn’t just for men.
A Family Affair
For April, racing isn’t just an individual pursuit—it’s a family affair. Her father acts as the crew chief, and she shares her passion with Jeff, who has supported and encouraged her at every turn. There’s something truly special about the bond formed while racing, and it’s a connection that runs deep for April and Jeff.
Their dream for the future? To race at legendary tracks like Sebring and Road Atlanta. And while April jokes about eventually beating Jeff on the track, the love and camaraderie they share is the true heart of their journey.
What’s Next for April?
Looking ahead, April’s goals are clear: she plans to race even harder, faster, and with more focus. With a race license under her belt and a continued commitment to improving, April is pushing the limits.
Her advice to others? Get involved in motorsports—whether you’re a woman or a man. The track doesn’t discriminate. And with a little trust in yourself and the car, anything is possible.
Follow April and her team on social media at RHA Racing on Facebook for updates, results, and racing adventures!
Final Thoughts
April’s story isn’t just about racing; it’s about overcoming obstacles, defying expectations, and continuously striving for more. From childhood memories in a garage to the thrill of road racing, April shows us that motorsports is more than a sport—it’s a way of life. She’s proving that with determination, anything is possible, and we can all go full throttle toward our dreams.
Brystal Ahlman 2-1-2025
Brystal Ahlman: Racing Into the Future with Passion and Perseverance
For many, racing is just a weekend hobby. But for 14-year-old Brystal Ahlman, it’s a way of life. From growing up watching her dad race figure-eight cars to stepping into her own driver’s seat at just 8 years old, Brystal is proving that dedication, hard work, and passion can drive success in motorsports. Now, as she gears up for her first season in Hobby Stock racing, she’s taking on a new challenge—one that pushes her skills, confidence, and determination to the next level.
A Racing Legacy
Brystal’s journey began when she and her family attended a Cage Kart race at their local track. Instantly captivated, she knew she wanted to race. Her dad, a longtime figure-eight racer, supported her dream, and together, they dove into the world of motorsports.
Starting a little later than some of her competitors, Brystal faced an uphill battle. While others had years of experience, she was learning everything from scratch. But with each race, each setback, and each adjustment in the garage, she grew stronger, faster, and more confident behind the wheel.
Stepping Up to Hobby Stock
After five years in Cage Karts, Brystal is making the exciting—and nerve-wracking—jump to Hobby Stock racing. Unlike karting, where her dad was by her side in staging, she’ll now be navigating the track on her own, making split-second decisions, and competing against racers of all ages.
She admits the transition is a big step:

Yvonnda Hutchins: Finding Purpose, Passion, and Victory in Motorsports
For many, motorsports is a thrilling hobby, but for Yvonnda Hutchins, it became a path to healing, a lifestyle, and a passion. From a life-changing tragedy to championship victories, Yvonnda’s journey proves that racing isn’t just about speed—it’s about resilience, determination, and the incredible power of community.
From Heartbreak to Horsepower
Yvonnda’s entry into racing wasn’t a typical one. Five years ago, she suffered the devastating loss of her daughter. As she struggled to navigate life without her, her husband encouraged her to find an outlet, a way to channel her energy and emotions.
“I was lost,” Yvonnda shared. “My whole life was taking care of her, and then one day, it was just over.”
Her husband, a longtime racer himself, saw an opportunity to help her heal. He encouraged her to get behind the wheel and experience racing for herself. That pivotal moment happened at South Georgia Motorsports Park, where Yvonnda made her first pass—and instantly fell in love.
“I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since,” she said. “That first pass, that rush of adrenaline—it hooked me for life.”
Racing to the Top
Yvonnda started at her local Buffalo Valley Dragway, an ⅛ mile track in Tennessee, learning the fundamentals. But she quickly realized she wanted more speed and competition, leading her to Bowling Green’s ¼ mile track.
In 2023, she joined Women in Wheels, a race series dedicated to supporting female racers of all skill levels. That decision changed everything.
🚦 Major Achievements:
✔️ 2023 & 2024 Women in Wheels Champion 🏆
✔️ Competed nationwide in Streetcar Takeover events
✔️ Traveled cross-country, including Bandimere Speedway in Colorado
Despite her success, Yvonnda remains humble, crediting her husband, tuner, and racing community for helping her grow. Bracket racing, a discipline that requires precision and consistency rather than raw speed, has become her specialty.
“I love the science behind bracket racing,” she explained. “It’s not just about going fast—it’s about strategy, skill, and execution.”
A Second Family at the Track
Beyond the competition, Yvonnda values the friendships and camaraderie she’s built in the racing world.
“I go to the track for the people just as much as the racing,” she said. “I’ve met some of my best friends through motorsports.”
She and her husband have embraced the racing lifestyle, traveling in their custom-built converted ambulance—complete with a queen bed, shower, and TV. Whether they’re racing, stopping at casinos, or supporting their drifting son at events, motorsports is a family affair.
Racing in Honor of Her Daughter
Yvonnda carries her daughter’s memory with her to every race. She keeps a picture of her in the car and often finds dimes in the pits, which she sees as a sign of her daughter’s presence.
“She’s still my driving force,” Yvonnda shared. “I want to keep making her proud.”
Advice for Women in Racing
For women hesitant to enter motorsports, Yvonnda’s advice is simple: just go for it.
“Don’t be afraid. That first pass will change everything,” she said. “You don’t have to be the fastest or have the biggest budget—just have the confidence to show up.”
She also encourages women to block out negativity.
“There will always be critics, but racing is about making yourself happy, not them,” she added. “Let them talk—while you keep winning.”
What’s Next for Yvonnda?
In 2024, Yvonnda is expanding her racing journey, competing in drag-and-drive events while considering a move into heads-up racing. No matter what, she’ll continue pushing forward, proving that women belong in motorsports—and they can win.

Addy Wade 1-29-2025
Racing Against the Odds: Addy Wade’s Journey in Dirt Track Racing
Motorsports has long been a male-dominated field, but young drivers like Addy Wade are changing the game. In a recent episode of the Women's Motorsports Network Podcast, host Melinda Russell sat down with Addy to talk about her passion for racing, the challenges of being a young female driver, and her dreams for the future.
From Mini Wedges to Street Stocks
At just 15 years old, Addy is already a seasoned racer. She started in mini wedges at age nine, quickly proving her skill on the dirt track. Now, heading into her third season in street stocks, she’s taking on bigger challenges, tougher competition, and more tracks across Michigan and beyond.
Addy has competed at Thunderbird, Merritt, Crystal, and several other dirt tracks, with plans to expand her schedule this season. Her ultimate goal? Racing at Boone, Iowa—one of the biggest dirt racing events in the country.
Facing Challenges Head-On
While Addy loves the thrill of racing, her journey hasn’t been without obstacles. As a young woman in motorsports, she has faced criticism, unfair treatment on the track, and even negativity from a track owner. Instead of letting it discourage her, she’s used it as motivation.
"I think that when you just keep losing and losing, it’s good to keep a positive mindset. That way you don’t lose your love for the sport," Addy shared.
Despite the doubters, she continues to prove her talent and resilience. Her best way to respond? Winning races and staying focused.
Building a Support System
Racing is a team effort, and Addy is grateful for her incredible support system. From her dad and stepmom to her pit crew and sponsors, she has a team that believes in her. She also credits mentors like Richie Sutherland and Travis Stemmler for helping her grow as a driver.
"Before every race, my sponsor Ron Inklam gives me a fist bump and says, ‘Enjoy the ride.’ That always sticks with me," Addy said.
She’s also inspiring the next generation. At a recent race, two young boys from Florida told her their goal was to get a helmet from a racer. Without hesitation, Addy gave them her pink helmet, a moment that made their weekend—and left a lasting impact.
Looking Ahead
This season, Addy is competing for IMCA points and planning to race at more tracks than ever before. She’s also balancing racing with school and dreams of becoming a nurse practitioner.
Her biggest piece of advice for young racers? Stay strong, stay positive, and keep pushing forward.
"If they’re picking on you, it means you’re doing something right."
Follow Addy’s Journey

Angela Dulmes 1-29-2025
Angela Dulmes: The Woman Behind the Numbers in Motorsports
When we think of motorsports, our minds often jump to the roaring engines, high-speed action, and the fearless drivers behind the wheel. But behind every successful race is a team of dedicated individuals working tirelessly to keep things running smoothly. One of those people is Angela Dulmes, a key figure in timing and scoring at Plymouth Dirt Track Racing and the MSA 360 Sprint Cars.
In a recent episode of the Women's Motorsports Network podcast, Angela shared her journey from passionate fan to a vital part of race-day operations.
A Love for Racing from Day One
Angela's motorsports journey started young, thanks to her father, who raced and later crewed for his cousin. She grew up attending dirt track, asphalt, and snowmobile races across Wisconsin, eventually developing a deep love for sprint cars after watching a World of Outlaws race in the ‘90s.
Her involvement in the sport began casually—helping her parents at the track with ticket sales and pit passes while raising her kids. But what started as a side gig quickly turned into a passion-fueled career in race officiating.
From Ticket Booth to Timing Tower
Angela worked her way up, starting in pit steward roles before transitioning into timing and scoring, where her background in accounting and numbers gave her an edge. Over the years, she learned from some of the best, including mentor Sheila Leamer, who taught her the intricacies of scoring, handling lineups, and managing high-pressure race nights.
Her role is crucial—ensuring accurate lineups, tracking lap times, and keeping the races running smoothly. While computers help, Angela emphasizes the need for backup systems, quick thinking, and a strong team.
The Challenges of Being an Official
Timing and scoring is a high-stakes job where split-second decisions can impact an entire race. Mistakes happen, but Angela and her team handle them with professionalism—double-checking results, communicating with officials, and being transparent when corrections are needed.
One of her biggest lessons? “Give me 30 seconds to save minutes down the road.” In a fast-paced environment, taking a moment to confirm results can prevent bigger issues later.
She also highlights the importance of educating fans and racers about the work that goes on behind the scenes. While officials often face criticism, she believes in keeping an open line of communication and inviting people to learn about the process firsthand.
Growing the Next Generation
Beyond her personal journey, Angela is passionate about mentorship. She actively trains young talent like her daughter and Abby Coppers, who aspires to work in high-level racing. She believes in hands-on learning, giving new officials real experience in timing and scoring to help them grow their confidence and skills.
Her goal? To bridge the gap between generations and series, bringing people together to strengthen the sport.
Balancing It All
With a full-time job, rental properties to manage, and a family to care for, Angela admits that balance is key. She relies on organization, list-making, and prioritizing what truly matters—knowing that vacuuming can wait, but race nights can’t!
Her biggest takeaway from years in motorsports? “Put yourself out there, ask questions, and keep learning.”
Final Thoughts
Angela Dulmes is a behind-the-scenes powerhouse in racing, proving that the sport isn’t just about drivers—it’s about the entire team that makes race day happen. Her story is an inspiration to anyone looking to break into motorsports in an official capacity.
As she steps into 2025 with a goal to grow, learn, and expand her role in racing, one thing is certain: her impact on the sport is just getting started.

Sarah Roderick 1-29-2025
Breaking Barriers: Sarah Roderick’s Journey in Drag Racing
Motorsports has long been a male-dominated industry, but women like Sarah Roderick are proving that speed has no gender. With 37 years of experience in racing—starting from just six weeks old at the track—Sarah has become a force in Australian drag racing, balancing life as a competitor, mentor, and mother to a rising star in the sport.
A Life at the Track
Sarah’s passion for racing runs deep in her family. Her uncle was a racer, and her father spent decades as a crew member. Naturally, she wanted in on the action. However, despite her early enthusiasm, she had to wait until she turned 17 in 2005 to finally get behind the wheel.
Since then, she has competed in multiple drag racing categories, including Modified Dragsters, Top Sportsman, and now Super Comp, constantly pushing herself to go faster and perform better. With a best time of 7.47 seconds on the quarter-mile, she is proving she belongs among the best.
A Mother-Daughter Racing Duo
Racing isn’t just Sarah’s passion—it’s a family affair. Her 17-year-old daughter, Ashley, also competes in junior dragsters, and wherever Sarah races, Ashley is right there beside her. The mother-daughter duo supports each other both on and off the track, making memories and inspiring other young girls to chase their dreams.
Ashley is already making a name for herself, becoming only the 10th female in Australian drag racing history to win the prestigious Winter Nationals—a four-day championship event that is one of the biggest in the country. With her junior dragster days coming to an end at 18, Ashley is gearing up to transition into the next level of competition.
Overcoming Challenges and Changing the Game
Despite her success, Sarah has faced her fair share of obstacles. In a sport where women are still in the minority, she has constantly had to prove herself. Skeptics doubted her ability, but she let her performance do the talking—winning her very first race and continuing to earn respect in the field.
Her biggest challenge came in 2023 when a severe tire shake caused her to hit her head multiple times inside the car. The impact led to a serious brain injury, forcing her to step back from racing to recover. Even now, she still deals with lingering effects, but that hasn’t stopped her from getting back behind the wheel, determined to keep pushing forward.
Supporting the Next Generation of Female Racers
Beyond her own racing career, Sarah is committed to mentoring young women in motorsports. Through her involvement in Center Steer Motorsport, she is helping create a graduate program specifically for female drivers, providing them with opportunities to transition from junior dragsters into higher-level racing.
She believes that young women shouldn’t have to fight so hard for opportunities and is dedicated to making the path easier for the next generation. Her team’s slogan, “Yeah, the Girls,” perfectly sums up her mission—to lift women up and show that they belong in the sport.
Looking Ahead
With the 2024 season kicking off soon, Sarah is excited for what’s ahead—both for herself and for Ashley. She also has big plans to bring together more women in motorsports, including a special podcast event during the Winter Nationals in June, where female racers from across Australia and New Zealand will share their stories.
Sarah’s journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and breaking barriers. She’s not just competing—she’s paving the way for more women to take their place in motorsports.

Breaking Barriers in Motorsports: Betty Nelson & The Ladies Acceleration Tour
The world of motorsports has long been dominated by men, but trailblazers like Betty Nelson are changing the game. As a racer with over two decades of experience and the founder of the Ladies Acceleration Tour (LAT), Betty is creating opportunities for women to thrive on the track. Recently, she sat down with Melinda Russell on the Women’s Motorsports Network Podcast to discuss her journey, the challenges of keeping women’s racing divisions alive, and her ambitious plans for the future.
Betty Nelson’s Racing Journey
Betty’s love for racing began in 1999 when she first hit the track in a Volkswagen GTI. Over the years, she honed her skills, racing in various divisions and earning podium finishes. After a brief hiatus, she returned to the sport in the mid-2010s, moving up to the Mad Bomber division and competing in some of Maine’s most competitive tracks.
Her passion for motorsports is deeply rooted in family—her father introduced her to the sport, and now her children are also getting involved. However, as she continued to race, she noticed a disturbing trend: women’s racing divisions were disappearing.
The Birth of the Ladies Acceleration Tour
With women’s divisions vanishing across Maine, Betty saw a need for a dedicated women’s racing series. She wanted to ensure that women who preferred racing among their peers had the opportunity to do so. Thus, in late 2023, she took a leap of faith and launched the Ladies Acceleration Tour.
The LAT began with just seven registered cars but quickly gained momentum. By 2024, they had multiple tracks on board, including Unity Raceway, Speedway 95, Riverside Speedway, and Wiscasset Speedway. The tour features two divisions—V8s and four-cylinders, allowing women to compete at a high level in a supportive environment.
Why Women-Only Racing Matters
One of the most significant debates in motorsports is whether women need separate divisions. Betty and many of her racers believe that while some women are comfortable racing against men, others prefer an environment where they don’t have to worry about aggressive competition, expensive car damage, or lack of support.
The Ladies Acceleration Tour provides women with a space where they can focus on improving their skills, building confidence, and competing fairly. The overwhelmingly positive response from both drivers and fans has proven that there is a real need for this type of series.
2025 Season: What’s Next for the Ladies Acceleration Tour?
Betty and her team have been hard at work preparing for an even bigger and better 2025 season. Some exciting developments include:
✅ New tracks added, including Spud Speedway in Maine
✅ A growing roster of drivers, with several new racers joining the tour
✅ A major “big money” race at Unity Raceway, offering one of the largest payouts for women’s racing in the region
✅ Stronger sponsorship support, helping to cover costs and expand the tour’s reach
Betty is also looking to expand the tour into New Hampshire to accommodate the growing interest from female racers in the region. With the momentum building, she hopes that similar tours will emerge in other parts of the country.
A Legacy for Future Female Racers
For Betty, the Ladies Acceleration Tour is more than just a racing series—it’s about leaving a legacy. She wants future generations of female racers to have opportunities that didn’t exist before. Whether it’s young girls dreaming of becoming professional drivers or experienced racers looking for a supportive environment, Betty’s mission is to keep women on the track.
She also encourages other women in motorsports to step up and create similar opportunities in their regions. If someone wants to start a Ladies Acceleration Tour in another state, Betty is more than happy to lend her expertise.
How to Support the Ladies Acceleration Tour
If you want to support women in motorsports, there are plenty of ways to get involved:
🔹 Follow the LAT on social media – Facebook & Instagram (@LadiesAccelerationTour)
🔹 Attend a race – Check the 2025 schedule and catch a race live
🔹 Become a sponsor – Help fund a racer or the tour itself
🔹 Spread the word – Share this blog, listen to the podcast, and tell others about LAT
For more information, visit LadiesAccelerationTour.com.
Final Thoughts
The Ladies Acceleration Tour is proving that women’s racing isn’t just a novelty—it’s a necessity. Thanks to pioneers like Betty Nelson, female racers are getting the recognition and support they deserve. Whether you’re a racer, a fan, or just someone who loves an underdog story, this tour is something worth watching.
Stay tuned, support the movement, and let’s keep pushing for more representation in motorsports! 🏁

Whether you're a lifelong fan, a racer yourself, or simply curious about the extraordinary women behind the wheel, our podcast connects and uplifts women in motorsports, one inspiring story at a time.
In our latest episode, host Melinda Russell sits down with the trailblazing Zandara Kennedy, whose journey into motorsports is anything but conventional. From circus performer to professional stunt driver and Formula Drift competitor, Zandara's story is one of determination, resilience, and a passion for driving.
A Unique Path to Motorsports
Zandara's background in trampoline and circus performance might not seem like the typical route to motorsports, but it's precisely this unique journey that set her apart. After an injury redirected her path, she discovered stunt driving and quickly became hooked. "I thought I would be a performer in Cirque du Soleil," Zandara shares. "But life had other plans."
Her dedication led her to train rigorously, investing every bit of her earnings into mastering the art of stunt driving. From taking classes at Willow Springs to rally schools and drifting courses, Zandara's relentless pursuit of excellence eventually earned her a license in Formula Drift, making her the only Canadian woman to achieve this feat.
Challenges and Triumphs in Formula Drift
Competing in Formula Drift wasn't without its challenges. The financial burden of professional motorsports was a significant hurdle, with Zandara selling her home to fund her racing career. "I was choosing between being able to practice and having a crew," she admits. Despite these challenges, she persevered, clocking over 20,000 miles across the U.S., participating in over 80 track days, and learning valuable lessons along the way.
Beyond the financial struggles, adjusting to the high-speed and high-stakes environment of Formula Drift was daunting. "If I'm not terrified when I'm competing, I'm not driving hard enough," she says. Her journey is a testament to pushing limits and embracing the fear that comes with competitive motorsports.
Women of FD Tour: Creating Opportunities
Recognizing the lack of visibility for women in motorsports, Zandara launched the Women of FD Tour, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at connecting women with opportunities beyond the driver's seat. "There are so many incredible women in this space, but they don't get highlighted," she explains. The tour brings women together, providing networking opportunities, mentorship, and exposure to various roles within the motorsports industry.
The success of the tour has been overwhelming, with over 125 women participating so far. From engineers to spotters and marketing professionals, the Women of FD Tour showcases the diverse career paths available in motorsports and empowers women to explore their potential.
The Future of Women in Motorsports
Zandara is not slowing down anytime soon. Her plans for 2025 include competing in events such as Hot Pit Auto Fest and Grid Life, as well as expanding her Women of FD Tour. She also aims to host educational events, creating safe spaces for women to learn essential automotive skills in a fun and engaging environment.
Her message to aspiring women in motorsports is clear: "If you're even curious, just show up. The community is welcoming, and people are eager to help."

Cheyenne’s journey into motorsports began at the age of 10, introduced by her father, a former drag racer and go-kart enthusiast. It wasn’t a smooth start—shyness kept her from embracing the track immediately, but her father’s gentle persistence led to a pivotal moment when she finally stepped into a go-kart. The rest, as they say, is history.

She has faced numerous challenges along the way, including adapting to new vehicles and navigating ever-changing rules in the motorsports world. More recently, she achieved her personal best finish in Spec Miata, placing 5th in the SCCA Chili Pepper Regionals.
For Cheyenne, racing is more than just a sport—it’s a testament to her belief that autism is an ability, not a disability. She shares how stepping into the car transforms her, allowing her to focus and thrive in ways that highlight her unique strengths. Her advocacy for autism awareness resonates deeply, inspiring others to see differences as opportunities for greatness.

Racing, Resilience, and New Roads: Meet the Westfall Family
In the high-octane world of motorsports, the Westfall family is proof that the love of racing can span generations, teaching invaluable life lessons along the way. Recently featured on the Women's Motorsports Network Podcast, the family shared their story, highlighting resilience, teamwork, and empowerment.
Melinda Russell, the host, sat down with Sarah Westfall and her daughters, Sadie and Macee, who represent the fourth generation of racers in their family. While Sadie and Macee's journeys in mini wedges were marked by victories and challenges, both have carved out unique paths for their future.
Sadie, who won multiple races and earned an impressive collection of trophies, made the decision to step away from racing after a frightening car flip. Her next chapter? Cheerleading and softball—new challenges she's eager to tackle. Macee, meanwhile, has embraced her role as the family "grease monkey," working alongside her dad and planning a return to racing when she's 13.
The Westfalls’ story also celebrates women in motorsports, from Nana serving as a crew chief to Macee holding her own on the track against older competitors. Their experience serves as a reminder that whether you’re racing or cheering from the sidelines, resilience, adaptability, and determination are the keys to success.
"Racing is a sport where you lose more than you win," said Sarah, reflecting on the lessons her daughters have learned. "But it teaches them about sportsmanship, perseverance, and finding joy in the journey."
Lara Wilde 1-22-2025
In the latest episode of the Women's Motorsports Network podcast, hosts Melinda Russell and Lara Wilde delved into the empowering realm of women in motorsports, shedding light on their remarkable achievements and the community's spirit of support and recognition.
Throughout the episode, Lara Wilde, a prominent figure in the motorsports industry, shared thought-provoking insights and experiences, emphasizing the equality and passion that drive success in the field. One standout quote from Lara encapsulates the essence of gender-neutral competition in motorsports: "At no point when you're racing a car, do you think, oh, if only I had testicles right now, I'd go faster."
Here are three valuable takeaways from the episode:
1. Equality in Motorsports: The podcast reiterates that motorsports offer a level playing field for both men and women, where success is determined by dedication and skill rather than gender. Lara's anecdote about being patted on the head during a commentary session underscores the importance of recognizing competence over gender.
2. Community Support: Lara's involvement in the Australian Women's Motoring Network highlights the significance of fostering support networks for women in motorsports. These platforms provide essential opportunities and guidance, ensuring that women have the same access to resources and opportunities as their male counterparts.
3. Beyond Racing: Lara's reflections on the emotional connection people have with their vehicles shed light on the broader impact of motorsports. It's not just about competition; it's about the stories, memories, and friendships formed within the motorsports community that make it truly special.
As Melinda aptly puts it, "You never know who you're going to meet and what story they're going to tell and how good a friend you could become. There's a new friend around every corner." This sentiment reinforces the sense of camaraderie and support that defines the motorsports community.
The episode serves as a reminder that women have always been an integral part of motorsports, contributing their skills and passion to the industry. By highlighting these stories and experiences, the Women's Motorsports Network podcast continues to inspire and celebrate the trailblazers who are driving change in the world of motorsports.

In a recent episode of the 'Women's Motorsports Network' podcast hosted by Melinda Russell, the spotlight was on the remarkable achievements of women in the motorsports industry, with a special feature on Mercedes Lilienthal. Mercedes shared her journey from interior design to motorsports journalism, emphasizing the importance of transferable skills, adaptability, and resilience in navigating industry challenges.
Here are three key takeaways from the insightful conversation:
1. Embrace Change and New Opportunities:
Mercedes highlighted the value of trying new things and not being afraid to step out of your comfort zone. She mentioned, "I say in life that nothing's permanent and you can always try something different." This mindset of openness to change can lead to personal and professional growth.
2. Learn and Grow from Failures:
Both Mercedes and Melinda stressed the significance of learning from failures and setbacks. Mercedes expressed, "If you fail along the way, you learn." Acknowledging failures as learning opportunities can foster continuous improvement and development.
3. Prioritize Mental and Physical Well-being:
Mercedes emphasized the importance of taking breaks and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. She highlighted, "People need to be mentally and physically healthy." Recognizing the significance of self-care is crucial in sustaining long-term success in any field.
One quote that resonated from the episode was, "You never know where you might be able to go no matter if nobody's heard from you." This quote embodies the essence of taking chances and exploring uncharted territories in pursuit of one's passions and dreams.
The podcast episode shed light on the challenging yet rewarding nature of the motorsports industry. Both Mercedes and Melinda shared personal experiences, highlighting the dedication, passion, and hard work that go into pursuing a career in this male-dominated field. The Women's Motorsports Network podcast serves as a platform to celebrate the achievements of women in motorsports and foster a supportive community for aspiring individuals.
